The Dominican Republic Justice system
The administration of justice at the national level is organized, based on the territory (ratione loci), in as many judicial departments and judicial districts as are created by Law. Currently, the Judicial Branch consists of eleven (11) judicial departments and thirty and five (35) judicial districts, namely:
- Judicial Department of the National District. It includes the Judicial District of the National District.
- Judicial Department of the Santo Domingo Province. It includes the Judicial Districts of Santo Domingo and Monte Plata.
- Judicial Department of Santiago. It includes the Judicial Districts of Santiago and Valverde.
- Judicial Department of La Vega. It includes the Judicial Districts of La Vega, Espaillat, Constanza, Sánchez Ramírez and Monseñor Nouel.
- Judicial Department of San Francisco de Macorís. It includes the Judicial Districts of Duarte, Hermanas Mirabal, María Trinidad Sánchez and Samaná.
- Judicial Department of San Pedro de Macorís. It includes the Judicial Districts of San Pedro de Macorís, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Romana and La Altagracia.
- Judicial Department of San Cristóbal. It includes the Judicial Districts of San Cristóbal, Villa Altagracia, Peravia, Azua and San José de Ocoa.
- Barahona Judicial Department. It includes the Judicial Districts of Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia and Pedernales.
- Judicial Department of San Juan de la Maguana. It includes the Judicial Districts of San Juan de la Maguana, Las Matas de Farfán and Elías Piña.
- Judicial Department of Montecristi. It includes the Judicial Districts of Montecristi, Dajabón and Santiago Rodríguez.
- Judicial Department of Puerto Plata. It includes the Judicial District of Puerto Plata.
The Judicial Branch is one of the three branches of government that make up the government of the nation. Its function is to administer justice, free of charge, to decide on conflicts between natural or legal persons, in private or public law, in all types of processes, judging and enforcing what is judged. Its exercise corresponds to the courts and tribunals determined by law.
The Judicial Branch enjoys functional, administrative and budgetary autonomy granted by the Constitution and by Law No. 46-97, of February 18, 1997, modified by Law No. 194-04, of July 28, 2004. The budget of the Judicial Branch, together with the Public Ministry, will be at least 4.10% of internal income, including additional income and surcharges established in the Income and Law Budget. of Public Expenses, and is distributed as follows: 65% of the 4.10 will correspond to the Supreme Court of Justice and 35% will correspond to the Public Ministry.
