Puerto Plata Telecom services

Puerto Plata Telecom services are available from various companies, some national and others regional. The top providers are Claro and Altice, both offering mobile phone, residential landlines, Cable TV and internet services. Starlink joined the market in 2022, via satellite. Other smaller companies offer Cable TV and Internet service in the North Coast, in some cases where the big ones do not. You can find them in this index.

claro telecom logo

Claro Dominicana has been around for a while, and their service in urban areas is much better, specially fiber optic connections. The Rates these days are competitive, with download speeds of up to 300mbps ( as of Sept. 2022 ). Check the links to view the current updates.

Also for Sosua, Cabarete, Cofresi and Costambar; the service can be subscribed via local authorized dealers, though these days it can also be done online and by telephone just the same.

Claro WiFi in Puerto Plata
Claro offers good value in their WiFi Plans.

Coverage: Claro Dominicana is widespread with mobile all across the island, except in some remote locations. They also offer residential cable TV and landline service. Claro also has a satellite TV service available for urban and remote areas.

Altice telecom DR

Altice has become a formidable competitor, with bundles of Cable TV, Phone and Internet that truly deliver. In Urban areas this is an excellent choice both for residential and business customers.

Altice internet in Puerto Plata DR

www.altice.com.do

Coverage: around 70% of the national territory, with 3,4 and 5G mobile internet. Altice also offers residential fiber optic Internet and home phone service in Puerto Plata. It is a solid network, at competitive prices. Their mobile service is one of the top in the North Coast regions of Puerto Plata, now with fiber optic.

starlink logo

More recently introduced, Starlink satellite service is now offering 200 mbps at a low price point of only US$2,990.00 (around US$56.00) per month, a true bargain. This is perfect for anyone who lives in one of so many areas where satellite makes a real difference, or those who can afford the high set up fee.

Starlink antenna and router

Now that latency and speed are no longer an issue for satellite internet, many who live in urban areas are taking advantage of the Starlink constellation, which can be mobile for about US$20 extra in the monthly bill. Set up fees are the highest of all providers, at around US$500.00 just to sign up and get the dish.

https://www.starlink.com

Coverage: nationwide. This service covers 100% of the island as expected, including all remote areas. Since most people use VoiP phone service (Vonage, Whatsapp, Messenger, etc) this means zero issues phone/data service 24/7 as long as you have uninterrupted electrical power.

Presidency

Dominican Republic Presidency

The government of the Dominican Republic is based on a representative democracy. It is divided into three branches of government independent of one another: the Executive Branch, the Judicial Branch, and the Legislative Branch.

The Executive Branch is headed by the President, who is elected by direct vote for a 4-year term and can opt for a second consecutive constitutional term, without the possibility of running for office again. The President appoints the Cabinet and the governors of the 31 provinces.

He executes the laws approved by the Legislative Branch and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Mayors and municipal councilors are also elected by direct vote for a 4-year term to administer the 124 municipalities and the National District (Santo Domingo).

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader
President Luis Abinader speaks to the national assembly.

The current president for the 2024-2028 period is Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona, for the PRM party, who on his second term in the post still commands one of the top acceptance levels among the voters and is expected to win reelection for a second mandate due to his  campaign against government corruption.

The Legislative Branch consists of a bicameral Congress made up of the Senate, with 32 members, and the Chamber of Deputies, with 178 members. The members of both chambers are elected by direct vote of the corresponding province.

Jose I. Paliza, government minister of the Dominican Republic
Chief of Staff Jose Ignacio Paliza, a native of Puerto Plata.

Puerto Plata has a special importance in this government, because it has been a favorite area for the president and his family for many years; also because the Chief of Staff is a native from here, Mr. Jose Ignacio Paliza, and he was the Senator of the province as well.

The Judicial Power is administered by the Supreme Court of Justice, which is made up of 16 judges appointed by the National Council of the Magistrature, an entity created to guarantee the independence of the other powers of the State.

The National Council of the Judiciary, as stated by the Constitution, must have as members representatives of the official party, the opposition party and the Supreme Court of Justice.

The website of the presidency of the Dominican Republic has a portal with a vast library of videos and information; we recommend the series about the national palace, a series of short videos with historic information and insider walk-through like never before: https://presidencia.gob.do/series/conoce-el-palacio-nacional/construccion

The settings in Youtube allow you to set the CC (closed caption) translated in any language, as these videos were recorded in Spanish. The same website has a section on the current public policies being implemented, gallery of pictures and important information and links to Dominican government ministries.

Utilities

Puerto Plata Utilities

Puerto Plata utilities are serviced by both public (governmental) and private providers, and the area where you live will be determining which provider you can choose. The National grid in the North Dominican Republic is serviced by Electricidad del Norte (Edenorte) which delivers with minimal interruption in most communities.

The second player (PPE) is dedicated to Playa Dorada and its surrounding areas of El Doral, Torre Alta, etc. in the main city (San Felipe), with close to 99% uptime. Considering the amount of sunlight in the island and the savings from it, many are installing solar power technology in their homes.

Electrical Voltage in Dominican Republic is 110V

In the DR you can find type A and type B outlets and connectors. We use 220V only for air conditioning connections; you can choose to install 220V outlets in your home if you truly need them (special European appliances might require it).

The Dominican Republic National Police

The Dominican Republic, a nation of sun-kissed beaches, rich history, and a vibrant culture, relies on its law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of its residents and millions of visitors each year. At the forefront of this mission is the Dominican Republic National Police (Policía Nacional Dominicana or PND), an institution of paramount importance in maintaining the safety and well-being of citizens and tourists alike.

Dominican Police

Historical Background

Established in July 2nd, 1921, the PND’s inception came during a time when the Dominican Republic sought to modernize and consolidate its law enforcement capabilities. Since its formation, the force has undergone multiple reforms to address the changing dynamics of crime and public safety in the nation.

Roles and Responsibilities

The primary objective of the PND is to maintain public order, prevent and investigate crimes, and protect the rights and freedoms of individuals. Their roles extend beyond traditional policing functions:

1. Crime Prevention and Investigation: From property crimes to violent offenses, the PND plays a crucial role in deterring criminal activities, conducting investigations, and bringing perpetrators to justice.

2. Community Policing: Over the years, the PND has intensified its efforts to build stronger relationships with communities through outreach programs, which help to foster trust and facilitate a more collaborative approach to safety and crime prevention.

3. Special Operations: For situations requiring a specialized response, like terrorism threats or hostage scenarios, the PND has elite units trained to handle high-risk incidents.

Importance for the Safety of Citizens

1. Public Trust: As the most visible representation of the government’s commitment to public safety, the PND plays a significant role in instilling confidence among residents that their security concerns are being addressed.

2. Deterrence: A well-equipped and active police force acts as a deterrent to potential criminals, reducing the likelihood of crimes.

3. Justice and Rule of Law: The PND ensures that those who break the law face consequences, reinforcing the rule of law which is essential for any democratic society.

4. Support in Emergencies: Beyond crime, the PND also provides assistance during natural disasters, ensuring orderly evacuations, aiding in rescue operations, and maintaining public order during challenging times.

Challenges and the Path Forward

Like any institution, the PND faces challenges, including allegations of misconduct, a need for better training, and resource constraints. Addressing these concerns through reforms, continued training, and transparency will be essential to enhance the force’s effectiveness and public trust.

Moreover, as the Dominican Republic continues to grow and evolve, the PND’s role in ensuring public safety will only become more vital. By fostering community relationships, leveraging technological advancements, and ensuring a professional and accountable police force, the PND can effectively secure the Dominican Republic’s future as a safe haven for its citizens and visitors.

Dominican Republic Tourist Police

Politur Dominican Republic Tourist Police is a special police to protect tourists, also referred to as the Tourist Police. They are everywhere in the tourist areas, on foot, by car, in 4wheelers , horses and can also be seen with jet skis in the water depending on the areas.

You can easily identify them by the uniforms which is white shirt or polo shirt, navy blue pants and blue hat or cap with the distinctive logo as seen below.

Politur LogoPolitur was formed in 1975 to cope with the demand of a rising tourism market in the Dominican Republic. It was a dependence of the National Police and worked mainly in the airports until it became an independent body years later, with more personnel and specialized departments.

Tourists who visit the Dominican Republic value and recognize the work of the hardworking officers at this institution, who make your security their priority and always are alert and willing to help in the event of an emergency.

If you ever need help just talk to an agent and they will assist you, not just in emergencies but in everyday life issues such as directions and guidance while you enjoy your vacations in the North, South or Eastern areas of the Dominican Republic.

This North Coast Guide offers you the assistance numbers in case you ever need to call a Politur office and get more information:
